The club had attempted to hold contract talks with Allen over the summer, with his previous deal set to expire in 2026, but were unsuccessful.

"On the back of his most productive campaign to date, we were determined to open dialogue around a new contract for Taylor," a club statement read.

"However, it became clear that this was not going to materialise and that the he wished to explore opportunities higher up the pyramid.

"From there, we worked collaboratively to ensure the best deal possible for the club was reached, in line with our valuation of the player, which was ultimately met."

Allen joined the Saddlers from Forest Green Rovers in 2022 and transformed into a key figure under Mat Sadler following his breakthrough midway through the 2023-24 campaign.

The 25-year-old has excelled since transitioning to left centre-back just under 18 months ago and registered 11 goals and eight assists in 57 appearances across all competitions for Walsall last term.

He won a hat-trick of awards at the end-of-season ceremony, including the club's Player of the Season award. In addition, Allen was named in the PFA League Two team of the year alongside fellow Walsall teammate Connor Barrett.

In total, Allen made 119 appearances for his hometown club, scoring 14 goals and setting up 11 more.

His final appearance was in the Saddlers' 1-0 defeat against AFC Wimbledon in the League Two play-off final at Wembley on May 26.

Allen becomes the latest player to exit Bescot following the departures of Liam Gordon and Ryan Stirk to Port Vale and Chesterfield respectively.

Former club captain Donervon Daniels, midfielder Jack Earing and striker Danny Johnson were also released at the end of the 2024-25 campaign.
