'One of the very best': Dave Edwards gives star man assessment on sad Wolves day

It felt like a sad day at Molineux with Wolves’ captain Nelson Semedo and Matheus Cunha seemingly saying goodbye.

Semedo has not signed a contract as of yet, and it looks like he will be departing - Cunha looks like he is going too.

I must say, the fans were magnificent. I know at times with Cunha there have been frustrations, but it just felt like all the supporters came together to appreciate what a wonderful player he has been for the football club.

Of course, there have been moments where fans would have wanted him to act a little bit differently or make different decisions, but there is no doubt in his ability. He is one of the very best to have played for our football team.

The fans were chanting his name a lot at the weekend, and they gave him the send-off that he would have really hoped for. He seemed desperate to do well. He worked so hard and wanted to get a goal.

I am sure he will be on his way, probably to Manchester United. I think he might get a few jeers when he plays against Wolves next season, but while it was his last match in the famous colours - the supporters gave him the appreciation of what his performances have deserved over the last 18 months or so.

Semedo, on the other hand, has been integral to the turnaround over the last six months. He was given the captain's armband at what was a very turbulent time, and his performances have been magnificent.

He has been understatedly brilliant in everything he has done for Wolves. He has never really been in the conversation of being Wolves' best player over the last couple of years, but he has been Mr Consistent week in and week out. I genuinely think he is one of the best right-backs in the league.

He leads with such calmness. I know people at the club think the absolute world of him. His team-mates and the staff too.

I was at Wolves training ground last week sitting in the canteen, he came in and shook every single person's hand who was there as a guest - that is what you expect from a leader.

The best moment of the game on Sunday was when he went out onto the pitch with the whole of his family, and all of the Southbank were roaring the Semedo song. They appreciate what he has done, and I am glad he has got the send-off - potentially if he does move on - that he deserved. Of all the signings Wolves could make this summer, the most important one would be trying to keep him.

They might have a couple of options to play there, but it will be so hard to find someone who is as consistent as he has shown.

After recent performances from the team, I was impressed with how they went about the game on Sunday - they certainly did not treat it like a dead-rubber.

You would have thought a few players might have been thinking about the summer. They might have been thinking about relaxation and not wanting to get injured, but it was a full-blooded game from both teams. Epitomised both sets of supporters giving both sides a standing ovation at the end of the match.

Vitor Pereira’s side played some really good stuff. They did lose control on a couple of occasions, and Brentford are ruthlessly brilliant at counter-attacking.

They played some positive football and with a good summer of recruitment, they could be a very good Premier League side next year.
