Wolves goalkeeper 'competing' to regain starting spot

Vitor Pereira says Sam Johnstone is competing to win back his Wolves starting XI spot.

The goalkeeper has had to settle for a role as back-up to Jose Sa since Pereira was appointed as head coach and he has been limited to FA Cup appearances.

He was partially at fault for Bournemouth's goal but then made a number of saves to keep Wolves in the game, which they eventually lost on penalties, one of which Johnstone saved.

"He's competing with Sa, Daniel, and King," Pereira said.

"He's competing every day.

"He plays at a good level with his feet. For me, it's important.

"He's a goalkeeper that can control the space in the back of the defensive line. He has good skills on the goal, good skills outside to control the crosses. He's a good goalkeeper.

"We have four good goalkeepers. Very hard workers.

"With the personality to be leaders and to help everybody in the club. I'm very happy with them.

"Sam doesn't have the personality to speak too much.

"He's a quiet person, but he's a worker."

Sa is expected to keep his place as Wolves return to Premier League action this weekend.

Johnstone, who will be unhappy with his role this season, could depart in the summer despite only joining this season in a £10million move.

Pereira was coy on the goalkeeper's future and hinted Sa will remain his number one, but says he is pleased with the effort Johnstone is putting in as Wolves fight for Premier League survival.

"You cannot change the goalkeeper in two games because if they lose confidence it's a big problem," Pereira said.

"He has a future. He has a future, like me. I have a future here or in another part of the world.

"We build our future, but I'm happy with it. I'm happy with his work."
