Wolves defender in talks to leave club

Craig Dawson is in talks to cancel his Wolves contract - while Sasa Kalajdzic is set to be omitted from their Premier League squad.

The experienced centre-back is bottom of the pecking order under new boss Vitor Pereira and almost made a deadline day move to Leicester, with Conor Coady coming in the other direction in a potential swap deal.

That move did not materialise and Dawson failed to secure a transfer elsewhere, with talks now under way to cancel his deal early, which currently has six months left to run.

He has also been left out of Wolves' registered squad and if his contract is brought to an end early, he will not be able to join an English team as a free agent, but could move abroad.

“I gave the information in advance to the club that if we bring in another centre-back, I will not have space for Craig in the squad," Pereira said.

“This is something that I I spoke with the club (about) for a long time.

"I had a conversation with the player and I respect the player a lot, and I respect his career, but his profile is not the profile that I'm looking to build the team around.

“It’s about profile, I spoke with the player, I explained the reasons and now it is something that the club must solve.

“As a coach, I need to be honest with the players.

"I need to to say what I think because for the player with his career to be here, without playing, just training, it's not a good situation.

"He is talking with the club (to become a free agent). It is an issue that he must solve between him and the club."

Kalajdzic will also not play for Wolves this season, with him set to be left out of their registered Premier League squad.

To account for the three January signings, Wolves need to make one more space available for a non-home grown player.

Kalajdzic, who has been recovering from a serious anterior cruciate ligament knee injury, was hopeful of getting some minutes before the end of the season.

But he will be the player to make way in the squad, after suffering the same serious injury twice already in his Wolves career.

Not only did Wolves need to make space in their squad, but Pereira is also concerned about Kalajdzic breaking down with another knock.

“Sasa has got a serious injury, I cannot put pressure (on him) because I think in this moment with his career he needs to recover totally from the injury," the head coach said.

“I think it’s important to have the time, the proper time to recover, step by step, not pushing, because if he has an another problem, it will be a disaster for his career.

“That's the reason he will be out (of the squad).

"I must have respect for the information of the the medical department. I cannot push a player to play if he has a problem and if the future of the player is on the on the table."
