Rodrigo Gomes loving life with starring role for Vitor Pereira's Wolves

Rodrigo Gomes says he is loving his starring role in Vitor Pereira's Wolves side after bagging another goal.

The summer signing, who was underused earlier in the season, started and scored in Pereira's first game in charge as Wolves beat Leicester.

He then dropped out of the side after Rayan Ait-Nouri returned from suspension, before being handed starts at wing-back against Nottingham Forest and in the FA Cup at Bristol City on Saturday.

The 21-year-old netted again in another impressive display, as Wolves made it through to the fourth round.

"It's very good for me, playing since the first day at Leicester," he said.

"I scored and since I've come in every game, and started against Nottingham Forest.

"Now I've played again and scored, so it's very good for me.

"I love to play, to help the team, to score and make assists. I haven't got an assist yet, but I will for sure.

"I love playing and helping the team.

"I feel very happy to get another goal and happy to help the team achieve the win, which is the most important thing.

"I will work more to score more.

"Since last year I played on both sides. If the manager wants me to play on the left, I will play on the left, and if he wants me to play on the right, I will play on the right and give everything always.

"We knew it was going to be a very tough game and we came here to win.

"We gave everything and we achieved the victory, so we are very happy.

"We haven't had too much time with Vitor to work on things in games, so it was important to work and to improve."

R.Gomes has started at wing-back - on both flanks - in the last two games amid Wolves' injury concerns, after previously playing further forward.

"I like that position because I have the pace and the lungs to do it," he added.

"Last year at Estoril I played that position before and it's a good position, I like it.

"It's very good for me."

When asked how he has so much energy, R.Gomes added: "I don't know!

"I've always been like this, with a lot of energy on the pitch and off it, always happy and with energy. It's me."

Former boss Gary O'Neil rarely used R.Gomes and insisted he was signed as a back-up in the summer, saying he would need time to get up to speed.

The Portugal under-21 international has now proved his quality and new head coach Pereira has backed him to impact the Wolves first team this season.

He said: “He is fantastic in my opinion, fantastic. He has energy —  a lot of energy —  and he is a fast player to play in this position.

“He has the capacity to go and to come back, to go and to come back, even when (he’s ill) because in the last week he was sick for four or five days.

“But he came today to the game. This is Rodrigo. He is consistent in his performance.

“He's a player for now, of course. We don't have a lot of players. Everybody is for now."

When asked what his best position is, Pereira added: “He can give me two options, because when he goes to the left side and we cross the ball from the other side he can score with his right foot and he can go inside and cross with his right, and he has the quality to cross with his left.

“It means on the left, he opens up other possibilities on the right side.

“He can go inside with the ball or he can cross with his right. He has a very good cross.

“And today he had a chance to score another goal on the post, I think."
