Exclusive: Wolves set for crunch head coach decision

The club are languishing in the Premier League relegation zone after a damaging 4-0 defeat to Everton on Wednesday night as the travelling fans turned on O'Neil and called for him to be sacked.

Wolves have managed just nine points in 14 games this season and it is understood that Wolves are considering a change.

The attitude of the players in that defeat to the Toffees was particularly alarming, as the squad appear to have lost faith in O'Neil's methods, and the club's hierarchy are looking at potential replacements for the 41-year-old.

It is currently unclear if he will take charge of the team for Monday's trip to West Ham, with a press conference for that game due this afternoon.

Wolves may choose to keep O'Neil in his post to avoid using an interim coach, ahead of a potential change.

The club have been sounding out possible successors to O'Neil, who signed a new four-year contract in August, and have former Chelsea boss Graham Potter as their first choice, but the 49-year-old is not expected to take the reins.

David Moyes is another manager that has been linked, but he is currently unlikely to take the role.

It is understood, for both of those names, that the Wolves project would be unappealing due to the self-sustainable model under owners Fosun.

Wolves went down the route of a progressive manager when they signed O'Neil and could continue with that philosophy.

The hierarchy will be keen to bring in a manager that can make the team more pragmatic in their defending, after conceding 36 goals in the league this season.

The club are planning to sign a centre-back in January to help ease their defensive woes, with just three senior players in that position following the season-ending injury to Yerson Mosquera.
