Wolves boss bemoans errors following defeat to Bournemouth

The hosts handed three penalties to the Cherries on a mistake-ridden afternoon at Molineux that saw the visitors score three goals within eight minutes.

O'Neil, frustrated by the result, has urged his side to cut out the basic mistakes that cost them the game. 

"It's hard to change a starting XI that performed the way it did away from home (at Fulham)," O'Neil said when asked if he got his team selection wrong.

"Obviously, in hindsight, if we had the game back again we'd try something different.

"There were loads of errors that gave us no chance of winning the game.

"I spoke to you in the press conference about Senesi putting balls in behind the back line and we had meetings on it and prepped it on the grass, so to concede a penalty in the first minute from something we knew was coming, was miles below the level we've set in the last four games.

"Then there were two crazy penalties from back passes when we had no need to play back passes in either of those instances. We could have played forward.

"There is stuff there that gave us absolutely no chance today, even though the lads kept fighting and managed to get themselves back into it.

"You can't make that basic of an error that many times in a Premier League game and hand points to the opposition.

"We need to make sure that come Wednesday we're in a much better spot to be more competitive.

"It does come off the back of a good run. The lads have worked extremely hard to wrestle back some momentum this season and today won't stop the work we're trying to do.

"It won't stop us being ready to put in a big response on Wednesday night."

Goalkeeper Jose Sa made a handful of errors and was involved in two of the penalties, while a number of other team-mates had afternoons to forget.

Despite his frustration at the result and the mistakes that cost Wolves dearly, O'Neil was keen to take pressure off the individuals that were at fault against the Cherries.

"We take responsibility for everything," O'Neil added.

"There's no individual blamed for any of those situations, it all falls under me and my responsibility.

"I'll look at them more closely. All of it is stuff we've discussed and we've prepped. We knew exactly how Bournemouth would press.

"We knew exactly what Senesi would do with the ball and we need to deal with those situations better.

"It's a very tough day for the group. They are very disappointed with the outcome and the good bits are overlooked.

"The beauty of the last four performances is that we found a way to be solid enough and create moments that made differences, whereas today we created moments that gave us hope because we made such big errors.

"We need to do better and the boys know."
