The midfielder has started the last two Premier League games after starting the season on the bench.

Wolves fans booed the decision to take Doyle off against Crystal Palace at the weekend and O'Neil says Doyle still needs to improve.

"I think it's also important to remember where he is in his development," he said.

"He came from Manchester City's academy, obviously he had a successful time in the Championship, but still isn't proven at Premier League level.

"We're still helping him with adapting to that. He has big belief in himself and thinks he should play every minute of every Premier League game, as you expect the players to.

"But he's still a young central midfielder with not much Premier League experience, a lot of ability, a great lad.

"We're delighted to have him in the group and we need to just make sure we use him well at the right times. We need to make sure we get the most out of him.

"The good thing with Tommy is that you know, no matter what he's needed for, he'll always be ready."

Despite that, O'Neil maintains that Doyle is an important member of the squad and his qualities will help Wolves.

"His intelligence is important to us," O'Neil added.

"Tactically, being able to take on information and being able to help the team understand what we're trying to do at each moment is one of his strengths. So that helps me from the side, being able to get it on.

"He's always 100 per cent committed, always going to give everything.

"He's really good to have around and he's shown that. We're really pleased with where he's at at this moment.

"I think a large part of him expects to be playing every week. He has a big belief in his ability.

"I don't think he's happy with his watching brief.

"Maybe when he first got here I think he understood that he was learning and that there was going to be a time to adapt.

"But I know he feels like he's ready. Of course, then it's on me to judge how ready he is and what week suit him best."
