West Brom hope to sign Portugal international winger Silvestre Varela on a season-long loan in the next few days.

Albion expect the 29-year-old Porto man to arrive in England for a medical in the next 48 hours ahead of a proposed switch to the Premier League.

Porto are willing to let Varela leave on loan after five years with the club and the Baggies have identified him as the man to add pace out wide in Alan Irvine's team.

The Baggies still hope to add one more attacking player before the transfer deadline on September 1.

Varela has 26 full caps for his country and played at this summer's World Cup in Brazil, scoring in their 2-2 draw with the USA.

The 5ft 11in tall wideman has played more than 100 times for Porto after starting his career with Sporting Lisbon.

He spent a season on loan at Recreativo in Spain but has spent the rest of his career in Portugal.

Baggies head coach Alan Irvine said after yesterday's goalless draw at Southampton: "We're looking to bring in another couple of players before the window closes.

"And they will be creative players at the top end of the pitch."
