'Watching Starmer being called forward by Trump was like watching some kid - would Thatcher ever have conducted herself like that?' - Your Letters and a Tipton wartime picture from our archives

Starmer being compared to Thatcher, Winston Churchill, and 'Uncle Silliband' - politics are a hot topic in today's readers' letters.

What would Thatcher do?

Watching Starmer being called forward by Trump was like watching some kid who'd just won a prize for an essay presentation by the Headmaster on speech day or maybe being made prefect or ink monitor in the old days. Absolutely cringeworthy!

He moves forward, Trump does his thing and then Starmer slinks away. Would Thatcher ever have conducted herself like that?

History lesson over Europe

A letter from Roger Watts is somewhat correct but not fully. Winston Churchill was re-elected in 1951 once again. He was all for a ‘United States of Europe’ but not of it, I had a letter printed to the effect. Regarding Robert Schuman, plan was based on Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi’s plan in the 1920s with other leading elites of the day. Schuman approached Jean Monnet with his plan, Monnet drafted the Schuman plan, everything about the present EU went through Monnet. He was the godfather of the day.

Roger Watts, you also want a reminder de Gaulle was credited with keeping Great Britain out of the then European Economic Community (EEC) since its inception in 1957, to rival that Britain joined EFTA a rival free trade association. De Gaulle used his veto about three times to keep Britain out of the current EU.

Uncle Siliband’s shift over our oil

I note that Uncle Silliband has been up to his normal irrational green stupidity whereby he has suddenly realised there is a loophole that allows us to drill for our own oil in the North Sea.

In a magical flash of inspiration, he realised that failing to utilise our natural resources rather than import them would be uneconomic! Apparently it was a worrying factor for the GMB boss Gary Smith if we failed to do so.  ‌ ‌

It appears that he has never really had a proper industrious job and always veered on the side of clerical work but Tony Bliar gave him the position Minister of the Third Sector in 2006, whatever that might have involved in terms of productivity (sounds like something from Orwell's 1984!).

I thought the Tories were bad enough but we have to suffer this lot for nearly another two years.

Not surprised at Royal Mail fail

There can be no-one in this country surprised at recent figures that show the Royal Mail is failing to hit targets for both first and second class post. We get no post for almost a week and then a big bundle arrives, suggesting it is being left stored up somewhere in the meantime.
