Yodel slashes lorry driver roles in Black Country town in its bid to become 'locker-first' service

A union representative described the cuts as “cruel and short sighted”

Yodel has announced that it has slashed 60 lorry driver roles in its bid to become a “locker-first service”.

The delivery giant told workers this week that with “regret” approximately 60 LGV1 roles would go across its sites in Hatfield, Hertfordshire and Wednesbury in the West Midlands.

Nicola Savage, national officer at the union GMB, described the job cuts as “cruel and short sighted”.

She said in a statement: "Cutting these jobs is both cruel and short sighted.

"Our hard-working, dedicated members are devastated. Agency usage is at a high in Yodel, whilst loyal employed workers face the axe."

Yodel was acquired by InPost last year in a £106 million deal.

A statement from InPost said: "As InPost continues to grow, we regularly review our network to ensure we remain responsive to customer demand and aligned with our long-term strategy.

“As part of that review, we have entered a period of consultation regarding a number of LGV1 driver roles across two of our sites.

“We are fully committed to supporting all potentially affected colleagues through this process, and we will do everything we can to retain roles wherever possible."
