Wolverhampton 'miserable' claim: Radio 1's Scott Mills and listeners defend

Radio 1 listeners have joined the growing band of critics slamming a survey that rated Wolverhampton residents as the most miserable in the UK.

A study by think tank The Legatum Institute said the city was the least prosperous in the country due to its low incomes and miserable citizens.

Yesterday DJ Scott Mills devoted his afternoon show on Radio 1 to the claim - and listeners from the city were clamouring to get onto the airwaves to air their views.

Mills summed the reaction up when he said: "It's absolute rubbish that people in Wolverhampton are miserable. Clearly it's not true.

"We've heard loads of happy people from Wolverhampton on here today. The claims are an absolute nonsense."

One caller to the show introduced herself as a former Wolverhampton Girls' High student who was now at university in Manchester.

She treated listeners to a song that she'd seemingly invented in a matter of seconds.

"Wolverhampton, it's the best," she sang. "We're less miserable than the rest."

She also described a disastrous first date in The Little Desert Shop. For the entire duration of the show Mills refused to allow any callers on air who did not have a link with the city.

They included a man from Essex who had only been to Wolverhampton once but had fond memories of 'getting off' with a woman there.
