Wolverhampton dubbed 'worst place' to take a driving test in new report
Wolverhampton has been named at the top of the list of worst places to take a driving test, according to experts at GoCompare

The report, which comes from the analysis of data released the DVSA, revealed the best and worst places to take a driving test based on pass rates.
Figures from 327 driving centres across the UK, released in June 2024, were analysed by experts at GoCompare for their UK Driving Test report.
It found that Wolverhampton takes the top spot as the worst place in the UK to take your driving test, with less than 4 in 10 people passing their tests (32.7%).
GoCompares findings show larger cities in the UK that have the lowest pass rate. Test centres in London, Liverpool and around Birmingham also feature in the list of the worst.
Their report explained: "Large cities are a challenge for learner drivers, with busy streets, complicated roundabouts, one-way systems and dual carriageways.
"These obstacles can make it harder to pass than in rural places, which have less traffic and fewer hazards. However, for many city-dwellers taking a driving test in a quieter rural setting is not a viable option."
Meanwhile, the best areas included more rural areas. Newtown, in Wales has taken the top spot for the driving centre with the highest pass rate, with 72.5%. Areas of Scotland have taken 2nd, 3rd and 4th spots all with pass rates above 70%.
Tom Banks, motoring expert at GoCompare, said: “Learning to drive and taking your driving test can be a really exciting, but also stressful experience. While there are a number of factors which could affect your test on the day, this report reveals that where you take your test could make a difference too.
“Pass rates across the country can really vary, with just over 7 in 10 passing their tests in Newtown but less than 4 in 10 in Wolverhampton.
"According to the numbers, the top 10 best places to pass your test seem to be dominated by rural areas, and while relocating just to pass your driving test isn’t a feasible idea, it may be worth considering a few options when it comes to deciding where to take your test.
"Take a look and compare the pass rates at your local test centres, and chat through your options with your driving instructor.”
