We visit the Wolverhampton school where ambition, careers education and well-roundedness are the keys to learning

Thomas Telford University Technical College (UTC) is a school where ambition shines and the school community thrives.

Students at Thomas Telford UTC, on the Springfield Campus off Cambridge Street, Wolverhampton, are taught that through ambition, respect, and community spirit, anything is possible.

Guided through a comprehensive list of core focuses and values, students thrive on academic and social excellence, in school and in their communities.

Under the leadership of the principal, Avtar Gill, the school promotes a 'clear and fair' routine in a purposeful and calm environment.

Mr Gill said: "We place a great value on developing well-rounded, ambitious young people through a clear set of core focus areas that shape everyday life at this school.

"Careers education and employer engagement sit at the heart of the UTC model, and remain a defining feature of the school's identity.

"This is supported by clear and fair routines that all students understand, ensuring exemplary behaviour and a calm, purposeful atmosphere.

Mr Gill said: "Teaching and learning are aspirational and adapted to meet the needs of every learner, delivered in a welcoming and inclusive environment that reflects the wide range of cultures, abilities and backgrounds that make up the UTC community.

"The school's unique character is further strengthened by the distinctive opportunities we provide.

"We are recognised nationally for our leading work in T-Level qualifications, and we work closely with other schools across the Thomas Telford Multi-Academy Trust to share our expertise and drive excellence."

Students at Thomas Telford UTC also benefit from longer school days, meaning that while learning the full national curriculum, students also have access to the bespoke 'Design, Build, Innovate' technical programme.

Mr Gill said: "In addition, students benefit from daily enrichment activities, academic interventions running until 5pm, and a programme of trips and visits in the UK and overseas.

"These broaden their horizons and enrich their personal development."

The school places kindness at the heart of its ethos, saying that it is a 'vital virtue' that will strengthen relationships, and supports the 'collective success' of the community.

The principal added: "These opportunities are underpinned by a strong set of school values that guide the UTC’s culture and expectations. Aspiration is key, and other values, including resilience, integrity, respect, adaptability, accountability, fairness and collaboration, shape how students learn and interact each day.

"Above all, the school places kindness at the centre of its ethos, recognising it as a vital virtue that strengthens relationships and supports the collective success of the entire community.

"Students and staff consistently demonstrate these values, creating an environment where everyone feels supported, motivated and encouraged to achieve their best."

When asked why students are eager to attend school, Mr Gill said that while students benefit from an "exceptional educational experience", they also "feel safe, respected, and empowered" through their school journey.

He said: "Ultimately, students are eager to attend Thomas Telford UTC because the school offers an exceptional educational experience that combines academic success with genuine care and opportunity.

"Pupils feel safe, respected and empowered; they know their voices matter and that they belong in a community committed to helping them thrive.

"With up to half the student body regularly staying on site until 5pm to take part in additional activities, it is clear that students value every moment of what the UTC has to offer."
