Lidl gets permission for 24,500 sq ft store on former Wolverhampton sausage works site, creating 40 jobs
Retail giant Lidl has been told it can build a supermarket and housing development on the site of a former abattoir and sausage factory.

Wolverhampton planners have granted approval for plans to build a 24,500 sq ft food store and up to 17 homes on the site of the former F A Gill works on the corner of Parkfield Road and Birmingham New Road.
Full planning permission was granted for the supermarket, although the precise details of the housing development will still need further approval.

Last month the developer was granted permission to demolish the former meat works, once owned by former Ludlow MP Christopher Gill, which has been empty since the company was taken over in 2023. Demolition work is expected to begin on November 1.
A total of 110 parking spaces are also planned for the three-acre site, including two electric vehicle charging points.
Access for both customers and service vehicles will be from Parkfield Road, and 12 cycle spaces will also be provided. Deliveries will only be allowed to take place between 7am and 11pm.

Approval in principle was also granted for 17 homes, ranging in size from one to four bedrooms, to be built at the rear of the site, but work will not be allowed to start until full permission has been granted.
A statement issued on behalf of Lidl said: "The development will bring a vacant parcel of brownfield land into active use, remediate the site, provide local job opportunities, affordable housing and bring inward investment to the area.
“The new foodstore will provide a fit- for-purpose facility for Lidl with a contemporary, well-designed approach which is environmentally sound.“The provision of up to 17 dwellings will provide affordable and family housing in a residential area and sustainable location.”
