Bethany is a real cut above

Five-year-old Bethany Smith-Harris has waited a long time for her first hair cut.

With her dark blonde locks down past her waist, the Northwood Park Primary School pupil's first brush with the hairdresser's scissors was in front of a large audience and all for a good cause.

Now cut into a short bob, a foot of Bethany's hair has been donated to the Little Princess Trust, a charity that provides real hair wigs to children suffering hair loss.

As well as donating her hair, Bethany and her school helped raise money for the charity by holding a fancy dress day, with children dressing up as princes and princesses and making a donation to take part.

Mother Zoe Smith, of Bushbury, said between the school donations and money raised with family and friends, they expected to have raised at least £350 which would cover the cost of making a wig. It is hoped Bethany's hair would make an additional wig.

Miss Smith said they had been watching TV when her daughter asked her why some of the children had no hair.

"I had to explain that these children are poorly, and because of their illness their hair does come out.

"We had been talking about having her hair cut and she asked 'could they have my hair?'".

Looking into whether it was a possibility, Miss Smith found the Little Princess Trust, who also suggested running a fundraiser.

When she was up on stage in front of her school mates Miss Smith said Bethany 'sat there like a little trooper'.

"She loved it, I don't even think it fazed her. She sat there smiling and telling everyone why she was having it done. She is whacking her hair all over the place now, she thinks it is great having short hair."
