Spitfires: Where to see the 90th anniversary flight of legendary Spitfire this Easter holiday
The amazing Spitfire will travel around the coast of the UK for its anniversary flight this week.
The iconic Supermarine Spitfire will take flight across the coastline of the UK this week to mark the 90th anniversary of the aircraft's very first flight.
The iconic aircraft embarked on its maiden flight on March 5, 1936, at around 4.43pm, under the expertise of Captain Joseph ‘Mutt’ Summers.
To mark the anniversary, the aircraft will embark on a nine-leg journey, one for each decade since 1936.
Over the course of the nine legs, the plane will visit key locations around the UK, including Southampton Airport, Exeter Airport, RAF Valley, RAF Lossiemouth, and Prestwick Airport.
However, whilst the iconic plane may not be travelling over the West Midlands, there are regions only a moderate drive away where you will be able to catch a glimpse of the legendary aircraft.
The visit would make an amazing Easter journey for the whole family, with each location passing a number of beautiful landmarks and areas to enjoy.
The second day of the journey, which will take place at 10am today, will see the plane take off from Southampton Airport, before flying to RAF Coningsby in Lincoln.
The car journey would take only two and a half hours, and pass some beautiful towns and villages worthy of a stop off, including Newark-on-Trent, and the historic village of Hanwick.
Another location that is not too far away is RAF St Athan.
Being only a two-hour and thirty-minute drive away, this MOD site sits only a stone's throw away from the sea, meaning you can watch the iconic plane land whilst enjoying a lovely seaside picnic.
The Spitfire will be flying alongside modern-day aircraft, drawing contrast to its historic nature, including the amazing F-35 fighter jets, and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
The weather will impact flight plans for the Spitfire, so to avoid wind or fog, and to allow for strict fuel planning, the definitive route will be made on the day.
