Watch: Work continues to build new West Midlands Interchange

New photos have shown the sheer size of a new Staffordshire rail served logistics development as construction continues.

New aerial photos have shown the amount of work completed and the sheer size of a brand new rail served logistics development in Staffordshire.

Construction of the new £1 billion West Midlands Interchange building began in October 2023 from a joint venture between Oxford Properties and Logistics Capital Partners, who acquired the site in 2021.

They are investing more than £1 billion in the project which will deliver eight million sq ft of commercial space when all three phases of the construction is completed and is expected to provide 8,500 new jobs.

Now, more than two-and-a-half years later, the scale of the work completed can be seen on photos taken by Express & Star chief photographer Tim Thursfield, with a large unit built up next to the A5 and A449 on the outskirts of Penkridge.

South Staffordshire Council said the Interchange was a nationally significant infrastructure project and the largest rail-served logistics development in the UK.

A spokesman for the council said: “The development, known as the West Midlands Interchange, would be around 300 hectares in size and is classed as a nationally significant infrastructure project.

“The nature and scale of the proposal means that the application will be submitted straight to the Planning Inspectorate (PINS).”
