Where and when Battle of Britain Memorial Flight aircraft to soar over West Midlands this weekend

Aircraft from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) are to fly over the West Midlands this weekend.

The BBMF operates five Spitfires, two Hurricanes, a Lancaster, a C47 Dakota, and two Chipmunk aircraft (primarily for training).

BBMF aircraft are expected to perform flypasts at the Upton Blues Festival in Upton-upon-Severn in Worcestershire on Friday (July 17), Saturday (July 18) and Sunday (July 19).

According to the festival, the aircraft are expected to fly over Upton-upon-Severn at around 19:30 on Friday, (Dakota and possibly Hurricane) 13:45 on Saturday (Hurricane) and 12:00 on Sunday (Hurricane).

The flights can be altered or cancelled due to poor weather conditions or other requirements.

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) operates from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire. The Royal Air Force write: “The mission of the RAF BBMF is to maintain the priceless artefacts of our national heritage in airworthy condition in order to commemorate those who have fallen in the service of this country. The RAF BBMF also serves to promote the modern day Air Force and to inspire the future generations.”

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will display at a number airshows and events this summer. In addition to the full displays, the BBMF also conducts up to 900 flypasts each year to make the most of the flying hours and transits to and from display locations.

The display season runs from May to September each year, with pre-season work-up flying for the crews taking place during April, culminating in Public Display Approval being sought for each pilot from the Air Officer Commanding No 1 Group.
