We visit the Wolverhampton school where children work together to 'be the best they can be'

Penn Hall School is a ‘very special school’ where every child is cherished regardless of their abilities.

Wolverhampton’s Penn Hall School isn’t just your regular run-of-the-mill academy. It’s a facility where every child, regardless of their background, ability, or requirement, is loved, cherished and welcomed as equals.

Located on Vicerage Road, the school is unique in its approach to learning. Every pupil is given an equal opportunity to learn and experience life in an environment that is tailored to their individual needs.

Catering to young learners with special education needs and disabilities (SEND), Penn Hall’s mission is one of caring, acceptance, and partnership, and during our time walking through its halls, we could see that it was a mission that they held close to their hearts.

The school’s motto of ‘working together to be the best we can be’ is felt in the halls of each corridor, each classroom, and in the eyes of every pupil.

It’s a simple statement that embodies a strong mission: to lift each other up above adversity.

Headteacher at the school, Mr Konrad Katarzynski, said: “Penn Hall is quite unique in the way it supports a wide range of complex needs within one inclusive community.

“Strong relationships with families and professionals ensure that learning is meaningful and relevant to real life.

“Everything we do at Penn Hall is about preparing our pupils for a life beyond school, developing independence, confidence, and the skills they need to thrive in their communities.”

Pupils at Penn Hall School were seen to benefit from a strong personalised learning programme, perfectly tailored for each young learner’s personal needs.

Mr Katarzynski said: “Our work focuses strongly on personalised learning, with every pupil’s EHCP at the centre of their education.

“Learning is carefully adapted to individual needs, with a clear emphasis on communication, independence, and skills for everyday life.

“We offer an ambitious pathway-led curriculum that allows pupils to learn in the ways that suit them the best.

“Academic learning, combined with practical, vocational and life-skills experiences, so our pupils are well prepared for adulthood.”

Wellbeing and support

Students were also seen to be well supported during our visit, with the school employing a strong emphasis on safeguarding, emotional regulation, and positive behaviour approaches.

The headteacher added: “Wellbeing is a priority.

“Pupils are supported through strong safeguarding, emotional regulation, and positive behaviour approaches so they feel safe, understood, and ready to learn.

“We invest heavily in staff training to ensure high-quality, consistent support across the school.”

Not only do students benefit from a strong internal leadership, but also from a strong leadership from their trust, the Amethyst Academies Trust.

The trust has built a strong system of schools that they call their ‘family’, with each facility sharing learning techniques and supporting each other the way a family unit would.

CEO at the trust, Ms Nicola Licata, said: “Our focus is unapologetically ambitious.

“We want high academic standards, strong attendance, exceptional teaching and leadership, and schools that are safe.

“What makes our Trust distinctive is not simply the number or type of schools within it; it is how we work together. We are a genuine family of schools.

“That means shared standards, shared accountability, and crucially, shared experience. Our motto, Aspire, Achieve, Together, captures this perfectly.”

Ms Licata commended Penn Hall school, saying that Penn Hall represents what education should always be about, ‘dignity, ambition, and opportunity’.

She said: “Penn Hall represents what education should always be about: dignity, ambition and opportunity for every child, regardless of need. It is not on the margins of our Trust; it is central to who we are.

“Penn Hall strengthens our Trust in profound ways. It keeps inclusion at the centre of our thinking.

“It challenges us to define achievement properly, not narrowly, but in a way that recognises the individual journey of every learner.

“Its knowledge informs our work across all schools, particularly in SEND, safeguarding, and inclusive practices.”
