A popular hotel which shut earlier this year leaving 50 people out of a job will reopen in the new year, it has been announced. The Compass Hotel shut in August.

The shock closure of the hotel, near Junction 10 of the M6 in Walsall, left at least one couple without a venue for their wedding reception.

But receivers acting for the collapsed business today revealed a number of operators were vying to run the 154-bedroom hotel and that it could be back up and running within weeks.

Edward Dewar from GVA Grimley Ltd said: "Advanced discussions are on-going with a short list of potential new operators, with a view to the hotel re-opening in early 2010. On behalf of our client, we are not in a position to disclose any further details at this stage."

The hotel is in receivership while its management company Walsall Operations Ltd went into liquidation.

Its collapse left Bilston couple Andrew Jones and Lisa Tipper unable to host their wedding reception at the time. They were also left £3,200 out of pocket.

The hotel was formerly the Quality Hotel, before being sold to Walsall Operations Ltd. It hit the headlines in June when it was threatened with closure because of a lack of fire alarms.
