Hundreds of English and UK flags have been placed around the Jigger Island in Brownhills, sparking pride but also road safety concerns.

Scores of England flags have been erected on and around the Jigger Island in Brownhills, after a summer where huge numbers of flags were put up across the country.

It comes as thousands of Union and St George's flags appeared around the West Midlands amid a national debate over immigration and asylum hotels.

The island, locally known as the 'Jigger Island' or 'Tin Man Island', on the A452 , near Brownhills High Street, is home to the 'Jigger the Brownhills Miner' statue, a 40ft stainless steel sculpture to commemorate the mining history of the town.

Now, the island has been adorned in scores of St George's flags, with the show of 'nationalism' drawing mixed reactions from many social media users.

Katie Butler said on Facebook: "Brownhills has definitely put the flags out. Good for them. We could do with a few more around Great Wyrley and Cheslyn Hay."

Many voiced their support but some responders warned of flags being "co-opted and degraded".

One anonymous commenter posted: "If flags are going up, we want them to be flown for reasons we are proud of.

"Do not let them be co-opted and degraded to show nationalism and hate."

Another commenter said that the flags have 'made Brownhills look better', and they 'should be proud of that'.

The comment read: "Even just the sight of all the flags makes Brownhills look a lot better.

"Our town has a great history, let's be proud of that."

The flags stretch across the island, as well as the neighbouring roads and green spaces.

Walsall Council leader, Councillor Mike Bird, said that the council 'will prioritise' community cohesion, and that the council is adopting a 'measured approach' to the increase in flags.

Councillor Bird said: "Walsall Council prioritises community cohesion and public safety and is adopting a measured approach to recent increases in St George’s and Union flags appearing in parts of Walsall.

"The council recognises the positive intention of residents who wish to celebrate national identity, whilst being mindful that others have concerns about safety and inclusivity."

The council added that flags attached to lamp posts and street furniture 'can pose hazards' to pedestrians and motorists, and may need to be removed to minimise the risk.

Councillor Bird added: "Flags may need to be removed as part of routine maintenance as they start to deteriorate, or if they cause an obstruction or pose a risk.

“We will continue to work with our communities to explain safety requirements and explore alternative ways to celebrate our identity.”
