The fire broke out on Sunday afternoon

Two people were able to escape a car that caught fire on the M6.

The fire on the northbound M6 between Junction 10a (for the M54) and Junction 11 (for Cannock) is believed to have started accidentally, fire service investigators have said.

The fire broke out shortly after 6.10pm on Sunday (June 7) with West Midlands Fire Service crews from Willenhall and Bloxwich attending.

On arrival, firefighters discovered the car fire on the carriageway and used breathing apparatus and hose reels to battle the fire.

Two people had freed themselves from the vehicle prior to their arrival.

Three lanes were closed whilst crews worked at the scene but they were reopened once the vehicle was recovered.

A fire service spokesperson said: “Shortly after 6.10pm on Sunday, we responded to the M6 northbound, between Junctions 10a and 11.

“A fire engine from Willenhall and a fire engine from Bloxwich attended, arriving to find a car fire on the motorway.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel to extinguish the fire, which is believed to have started accidentally. Two people freed themselves from the vehicle before we arrived.

“Three lanes were closed whilst we worked at the scene, but are believed to have reopened once the vehicle was recovered.

“We left this incident at 6.58pm, with highways still in attendance.”
