Mystery over old building on the border of Coseley and Tipton

Mystery surrounds the future of an old territorial army building in Tipton.

The building stands in Foxyards Road, on the Tipton and Coseley border, close to the famous Pie Factory. It was used by the Staffordshire Territorial Force Association (TA) until the late 1980s and has a plaque on it dating back to 1910

In recent years it was a later an electrical wholesaler’s warehouse and then used as a garage before standing empty - currently it is fenced off due to incidents of burglaries and vandalism and was the subject of a police raid into a suspected cannabis farm in 2023

It has been the subject of speculation on the Sedgley and Coseley (past and present) Facebook page overt what it is going to be used for next, if anything.

Some people also posted of their experience of using the building, with Leslie Benfield saying: “ When l was in the army cadets In the mid 60s we used to operate from there. Believe it or not for £10 there was a trip to Berlin airlifted in .A trip of a lifetime.

Others asked whether it could be used as veterans accommodation or preserved as a museum if restored.

Andrew Cartwright said: “When we hear so much of our veterans being homeless, wouldn’t this be an ideal opportunity for the armed services to renovate and refurbish such a lovely piece of architecture that is already steeped in armed forces usage/history?

“Possibly as veterans accommodation with a gymnasium that they could run as a source of income.”

Although the address of the building is in Tipton, the land comes under the control of Dudley Counci

A spokesperson said the building was privately owned and there were no current planning applications in for it.
