Surprise as bulldozers set for school

A former Willenhall primary school is set to be demolished - to the surprise of residents and councillors who say they have not been informed.

The old Clothier Street school closed last summer.

Bulldozers are due on the site within a few weeks to pull down buildings on the now derelict spot.

Preparation work is due to get under way on Monday with contractors expected to complete the demolition process by the beginning of February.

However, many claim they are unaware work is to take place on the school site, which was shut along with Little London and Lakeside schools for the new £4.5million Fibbersley Park Primary.

The area has been boarded up ahead of demolition and at this stage there are no firm plans for the site, although a housing redevelopment is the most likely option.

Willenhall councillor Sean Coughlan said: "I have not been informed about the demolition starting and I think a lot of people will be surprised.

"We were told by Education Walsall and Walsall Council everyone would have some say on what the site was used for and I hope that remains the case.

"There is a real lack of four bedroom family homes and would hope this is what the land could be used for. There has been issues of vandalism at the site which is currently an eyesore."
