Chadsmoor's Central Veterinary Clinic has seen two cases in recent weeks which staff say are the first they have experienced.

One of the owners, Lorraine Stewart, a 55-year-old housewife from Heath Hayes, arrived at the Chase, near the Tackeroo, with rescue dog Jez and within seconds he was bitten. Mrs Stewart said: "I got Jez back in to the car and got him to the nearest vet. It was really frightening."

The venom caused severe swelling to the dog's legs and travelled along his body. "He looked like a barrel," said Mrs Stewart.

Jez has made a full recovery following the drama, which happened last month.

But Mrs Stewart warned other owners to take care when their pets are on the Chase.

"I spoke to a ranger and he said usually they go away when they sense people or animals but if they are a bit sleepy, they might not realise until the dog is close and then they strike," she added.

Nursing auxiliary at Central Veterinary Clinic, Lisa Mabbley, said Mrs Stewart's prompt actions in getting Jez to them could well have saved his life. She said: "In the 11 years I have worked here, I had never seen a dog bitten by a snake, but we have had two in quick succession now."

Jim Stewart, wildlife ranger for the Forestry Commission, advised dog owners and parents with young children, not to allow them to run around in long grass.
