Warning as drums of acid found at Cannock recycling centre
The contents of the drums were identified as acid.
Locals in Staffordshire have been advised to recycle responsibly after fire crews were called to reports of smoke at a Cannock skip.
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue were called to a recycling centre on Lichfield Road at 10.15am today (Wednesday, October 21).
Two drums were removed from the skip which contained hazardous material.
Firefighters say they wore breathing apparatus to maintain their safety.
The contents of the drums were identified as acid and crews used two hose reel jets to dilute it.
Danielle Coleman, Station Manager at Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Putting hazardous material into a skip is extremely dangerous and can easily start a fire.
“There is also the potential of harming the recycling centre workers and other members of the public if they were to handle the material incorrectly.
“I would urge people to think about what they are disposing of and do so responsibly.”
