Udahamulla Perera, aged 41 and of Arleston, attacked his wife in July last year, Shrewsbury Crown Court heard on Friday (September 5).
Judge Deni Mathews was told that Perera and his wife came to the UK in 2019.
He heard that following a family row in July last year, Perera began slapping his wife and “bent her arm backwards” before kicking her in the stomach.
The court was told that Perera’s wife was 28 weeks pregnant at the time of the attack and had to be taken to Princess Royal Hospital in Telford where she fell unconscious.
Judge Deni Mathews described the attack as “profoundly serious” but handed Perera a suspended sentence after hearing the Sri Lankan national, who admitted the assault, now faces deportation, has lost his job and is barred from working in the UK. His wife has also left him.
Perera was given an eight-month sentence, suspended for 18 months.
