Man dies after industrial accident on Shropshire farm

Police said the death was not being treated as suspicious.

A farmer has died after an industrial accident on a farm in Shropshire.

Emergency service crews were called to Shifnal on April 12 after a man reportedly became trapped under a spreader.

The man sadly later died in hospital from his injuries.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: “On Sunday, April 12, we responded to a report that a man had suffered serious injuries on a farm in Shifnal, Shropshire following an industrial incident.

“Sadly, the man later died in hospital as a result of the injuries.

“His death is not being treated as suspicious with no third-party involvement and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

The incident was referred to in a report by Farming UK, which highlighted the dangers facing farmers working with heavy machinery, and the disproportionately high number of accidents on farms compared to other workplaces.

Jill Hewitt, chief executive of the National Association of Agricultural Contractors, said: "Sad news again as a farmer has been crushed under a spreader whilst out spreading fertiliser. He later died in hospital.

"Our condolences to his family and friends.

"The statistics are shocking but relatively easy to quote but far worse is the human impact of this huge loss."

The Institute of Occupational Safety and Health Rural Industries Community also reported the man’s death in a post on LinkedIn and shared guidance from the Health and Safety Executive on the safe use and maintenance of farm machinery.
