The mother of a pupil at a Wednesbury school is calling for 'strong action' from leaders after children witnessed two parents fighting in the playground.

She says it is the latest in a number of incidents at St John's Primary Academy in Addison Terrace.

An ambulance was called at around 3.20pm on Tuesday when two parents got into an argument and started fighting on school premises, as others there to pick up their children looked on.

The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said the fight continued for quite some time before the two women were separated and children were viewing it through classroom windows.

She said it is the latest in a 'number of incidents' which have impacted on children and parents and their education and that the school needs to take a tougher stance.

She said: "In the case on Tuesday, children as young as six and seven witnessed grown adults fighting and all the trauma that brings, along with an ambulance having to be called."

Messages from the parent's What's App Group seen by the Express and Star varied from condemning the fight to praising the head teacher who it said was doing everything possible to maintain discipline.

One message said: "The school has become a joke now, too many things happen which kids shouldn't be seeing – they don't see it at home so why should they come to school to witness it. The children might not have been involved but they saw and heard it."

Another said: "Parents behaving like that should not be tolerated and glad it is being dealt with properly. After being in both parent forum meetings it's clear the head teacher is doing everything possible."

Matthew Seex, the executive principal at St John's, said: "There was a parental incident on the school premises. This was prior to the children being dismissed at the end of the day and no children were involved.

"The academy operates a zero tolerance approach towards aggressive behaviour and is working in-line with the academy code of conduct and with recognised bodies in managing this matter."

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of a woman being assaulted by another adult on the school grounds.

"An ambulance was sent to the scene after a 999 call at around 3.35pm on Tuesday afternoon. The patient was assessed and treated at the scene before being taken to hospital as a precaution."
