Tanya March stabbed Andrew Davis, the father of her two-year-old child, in the back at her sheltered accommodation home in Hobart Road, Tipton. March, 20, admitted wounding with intent and was sentenced to 18 months at a young offenders' institute. Mr Stephen Cadwaladr, prosecuting, said the wound was two and-a-half centimetres deep.
Mr Davis needed hospital treatment after the January 4 incident Wolverhampton Crown Court heard.
"Arguments have punctuated this relationship for four years and on this occasion the defendant lost her temper and reached for a kitchen knife," he said.
"Mr Davis returned to the defendant's sheltered home after a night out and the pair soon became embroiled in an heated argument.
"As soon as she stabbed him with the knife she called the emergency services.
"He has since made a full recovery."
Mr Cadwaladr added that police had been called out to arguments between the pair on four previous occasions.
Mr Oliver Woolhouse, defending, described his client as a young frightened woman who had ended the turbulent relationship.
"My client's ex-boyfriend partly blames himself for the attack and withdrew his complaint to police," he said.
"She is remorseful and understands this type of crime is punished with custody."
He added: "The balance of power was in his favour and my client has recently ended the relationship."
Recorder, Peter Matthews, told March that her reaction was disproportionate to Mr Davis' aggressive behaviour.
"The stabbing took place in front of your small child and the consequences could have been far, far worse," he said.
March was sentenced to 18 months at a young offenders' institute.
