One of the Black Country's most significant glass sites has received a major boost by entering the country's Top 10 Most Endangered Buildings List.

Chance Brothers Glassworks, on Spon Lane, Smethwick, which at its height employed more than 3,500 people around the Black Country, has been selected by the Victorian Society to appear on a list of the Top 10 Most Endangered Buildings.

The site had previously supplied specialist lenses to 2,300 lighthouses across the world, making it one of the most important buildings in glassworks in the world.

Now, heritage leaders are calling for action to save the site after it was entered into a list of 10 endangered buildings, with the Victorian Society saying that 'it is in real danger of being lost' if action is not taken.

James Hughes, director of the Victorian Society, said: "Chance's story is unique and fascinating. It is one that is told through the fabric of its site, which is in part what makes it so precious, and the need to save it so pressing.

"All strength, therefore, to the Chance Heritage Trust and its ambitious regeneration scheme. Those in positions of influence should take note and must do what they can to support and realise the trust's vision."

The site is now managed by the Chance Heritage Trust (CHT), which looks to preserve the Grade II listed building and hopes the news will act as a 'high-profile catalyst' in gaining capital investment funds.

Mark Davies, chair of the CHT, said: "Chance Brothers Glassworks will be 200 years old in 2024, so it is very fitting that we get this perfect birthday present at a time when we need to be back on the local, regional and national agenda.

"The Victorian Society's Top 10 Most Endangered Buildings List is led by Griff Rhys Jones and commands high-profile media attention that will give our funding bids a dramatic boost."

The CHT chair went on to say that while support has been gathered from the West Midlands Combined Authority, Sandwell Council, Historic England and the Canal and River Trust, support stops when it comes to capital funding, 'which must change'.

Mr Davies continued: "Agencies and stakeholders, such as the West Midlands Combined Authority, Sandwell Council, Historic England and the Canal and River Trust all agree that something needs to be done, but support stops short of the capital funding required to move it forward.

"This must change. We only have to look at what has happened to the Crooked House, just a few miles away in Dudley – once it has gone, it is very difficult, if not impossible, to get back."

Future plans for the grounds include a mixed site of residential, enterprise, cultural, and leisure spaces, and an iconic 30-meter-tall lighthouse and original lens from Trinity House.

However, the focus for the group now is bringing the building back to use over the next five years, with 500 jobs set to be created if plans are realised.
