The case relates to the theft of a total of £130,323.61 worth of stock between June 2024 and June 2025 at the company’s Birmingham online retail sales hub where the three were based at the time.

Hub team leader Richard Taylor, aged 56, of Woodcross Street, Woodcross, stole £62,306.11 worth. Aaran Craker, aged 36, of Marlow Close, Netherton, stole £24,508.19 worth. Jonathan Edwards, aged 26, of Exmoor Green, Wednesfield, sold on £9,978 worth of stock over a four-month period.

All pleaded guilty to a count each of theft by employee and were subsequently sentenced at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

A Halfords spokesperson said: “Halfords is grateful to West Midlands Police for its support with this case.

“While incidents like this are rare, we take them very seriously and will work closely with the relevant authorities to ensure appropriate action is taken.”

The court heard that the hubs division would have been in profit at the end of the 2025 financial year if the items had not been stolen, but instead broke even on the balance sheet. As a result the division of 15 hubs faced the possibility of being closed down putting jobs at risk.

When the individual offending was uncovered Taylor and Craker resigned while Edwards was dismissed. Halfords took back wages of around £1,900 from each of them.

Taylor and Craker were sentenced to 14 months in prison, suspended for two years. Edwards was sentenced to eight months, also suspended for two years.

All three must carry out 150 hours of unpaid work in the community. There will also be a proceeds of crime hearing at later date to recoup further sums from them.
