Leah Court, the campaign's organiser, says the people of Dudley would benefit "enormously" from such an attraction.

The 21-year-old, from Dudley, is petitioning the borough council to build one in partnership with developers.

She is hoping to speak with council bosses later this month.

Leah said: "People of all ages, backgrounds and abilities can benefit from this and I truly believe it would unite our community back together especially after this season of isolation and distress.

"Not only can it be used as a general public leisure activity but it also promotes ice sporting events such as figure skating, speed skating, curling, ice hockey and disabled ice sports, as well as public show performances on ice and ice discos.

"The possibilities are endless. Even from the sidelines it is so entertaining to watch, there is something in it for everyone."

Her online petition has already amassed more than 190 signatures. See the petition here

She has received the backing of Castle and Priory ward councillor Alan Finch, who said Dudley "used to have a skate rink years ago opposite the Station Hotel".

The nearest current ice rinks to Dudley are in Birmingham, Cannock and Telford.

Councillor Finch said: "I have been saying for a long time that kids need something to do.

"We have got swimming and football in Dudley, an ice rink would be brilliant."

It is unlikely the council would build one itself, said Councillor Finch, but he said the council could help to work with developers in getting plans off the ground.

"I will be lobbying all the local councillors about it," he said.

No location has been mooted for an ice rink yet but Councillor Finch said one place could be Flood Street car park.

Leah said the ice rink would tie in with the ongoing redevelopment of Dudley town centre, which includes creating a new tram line, redeveloping the bus station and demolishing eyesore Cavendish House.

She said: "I strongly believe the addition of an ice rink would contribute enormously to our community.

"Whilst our current entertainment facilities are limited and with the next ice rink being over a good distance away, building one in the heart of the Black Country has the potential to be the next flagship building that attracts people from Birmingham, Wolverhampton and further afield - especially with the construction of the West Midlands Metro which will make it so much more accessible."
