Grand Theatre bosses want to expand into the former Post Office, which neighbours its current site on Lichfield Street in Wolverhampton city centre.

Today the Grand was holding an exhibition to showcase its designs for The Green Room. The exhibition was taking place from 12pm to 2pm with chief executive Adrian Jackson in attendance.

Mr Jackson said there was ‘so much more’ the theatre could be doing to contribute to the city, and said the new plans formed part of this.

He said: “There is a vision to make Lichfield Street the arts hub of Wolverhampton city centre and although the theatre already contributes massively to the local economy, there is so much more we can achieve in the community, for education and cultural enrichment.”

The plans are now available for public consultation as The Grand prepares to submit a planning application to Wolverhampton Council.

The Grand is also in negotiations with the building’s current owners about purchasing the premises.

Councillor John Reynolds, Wolverhampton Council’s cabinet member for City Economy, described the plans as ‘bold’ and ‘ambitious’ and urged residents to give their views at the public consultation event.

He said: “This is a bold move by Wolverhampton Grand Theatre to bring a major uplift to the city centre’s entertainment offer. I would urge people to go along to the public consultation event and take a look at these ambitious plans.”

Wolverhampton Grand Theatre is behind the plans

Keith Williams Architects have drawn up plans for The Grand, with illustrative designs showing how the new pop-up theatre could appear.

The Grand is one of the major entertainment venues in Wolverhampton and dates back to 1894.

A final decision on the project will be made by council planning chiefs.
