Post Offices in West Midlands among 52 facing closure as Morrisons to axe struggling stores - here's the list

Post Office branches in the West Midlands are among 52 facing closure following the news that Morrisons has earmarked a raft of stores to axe.

Branches in Bewdley and Walsall that sit within Morrisons stores are among those set to be closed.

Bewdley Post Office in Morrisons in Load Street is among those affected, as is Stephenson Square Post Office, located within Morrisons in Stephenson Square, Walsall.

The Post Office has launched a bid to find suitable retailers to keen to incorporate a Post Office branch into their existing or proposed business in those areas and other towns and villages facing the loss of their Post Office.

A spokesperson for the Post Office said: “Our retail partner has reviewed their Morrisons Daily store operations and has decided to close a number of their stores.

“Consequently, there are 52 stores with Post Offices that are regrettably closing by October. We fully recognise the inconvenience this will cause our customers and small businesses who rely on our banking and parcel services in particular, which is why we are seeking replacement retail partners for all of these locations.

“All of the vacancies are currently advertised on our runapostoffice.co.uk website. We have already received many expressions of interest from retailers. Some adverts for business opportunities will close this Friday as we want to open replacement branches as soon as possible.”

Morrisons said the performance of its company owned stores and franchise convenience business is subject to continuous review and the process has identified a number of stores, which were part of its McColl acquisition in 2022 and which were rebranded Morrisons Daily, “whose performance has been challenged for a number of years and which are loss making, despite remedial action”.

The supermarket chain said “significant cost increases resulting from Government policy choices” had “made returning these stores to profitability even more difficult” and a spokesperson said following the review: “We are now proposing to take the tough but necessary decision to close a number of these stores over the next few months.

"Regrettably, the proposal means that some of our convenience store colleagues will now be at risk of redundancy and a consultation will commence shortly.

“We understand this will be difficult news for them and we will be providing these colleagues with all necessary support. This will include finding other opportunities for impacted colleagues elsewhere in the business wherever we can, in our supermarket, logistics and manufacturing operations and we have a strong track record of achieving this historically. We will also work hard to mitigate the impact on customers, continuing to serve them through other nearby stores and online.”

Morrisons said the closure programme will only affect its company owned stores and that it continues to see the opportunity to open hundreds more franchise convenience stores in the years ahead.
