His resignation comes a week after he took extended leave from the authority where he earns £140,000-a-year.

Deputy chief executive David Stevens will continue to take his responsibilities, a council spokesman said.

It is not known why he has resigned or originally took extended leave last week.

A Sandwell Council spokesman said: "We can confirm that Jan Britton has resigned as chief executive. David Stevens will continue to take on responsibilities as deputy chief executive.”

The council refused to say why Mr Britton has resigned but confirmed he would not receive a compensation package.

His resignation follows a turbulent period at the council in which there has been three different council leaders in three months.

The current leader, councillor Yvonne Davies, took the post in May, after her predecessor councillor Steve Trow stood down following the local council elections, also in May.

Councillor Trow had replaced Steve Eling, who stood down in February after he was suspended from the Labour Party in January.

Mr Britton joined Sandwell Council 12 years ago and was chief executive for eight years.

He also held a role as interim chief operating officer at the West Midlands Combined Authority.

Warley MP John Spellar paid tribute to Mr Britton saying: "Jan played a significant role in Sandwell's excellent record in delivering services to the public, for which it has received national recognition."
