The footage, captured in Kabul, Afghanistan, shows personnel from 3rd Battalion Parachute Regiment using the Islington North MP as target practice on a simunition range.

Ms Reynolds said: "I find it totally disgusting and shocking and I hope the Prime Minister will condemn it. He is a 69-year-old man and leader of the opposition for gods sake, I am totally shocked.

"They are soldiers in the British Army. I know an investigation is underway but this needs to be condemned from the highest level to say that this is totally unacceptable.

"I am already fearful for my safety because of the way the debate is going nationally with people calling us traitors and saying we are betraying the British safety. I am really worried."

The MoD has confirmed it is aware of the video and is investigating.

A spokesman said: "This behaviour is totally unacceptable and falls well below the high standards the Army expects. A full investigation has been launched."

Defence Secretary and South Staffordshire MP Gavin Williamson has praised the "prompt" and "clear" leadership of the army in investigating the video.

A Labour Party spokesman said: "This behaviour is alarming and unacceptable. We have confidence in the Ministry of Defence to investigate and act on this incident."
