A total of 36,392 people voted for Leave (63.1 per cent), while 21,240 (36.8 per cent) voted Remain.

The turnout was a healthy 74.1 per cent, with 57,666 voters heading to the polls.

There was drama at the count when it emerged that not all postal voters had returned their voting statement or completed it correctly, meaning their votes could not be counted.

A total of 34 votes were rejected.

Mark Garnier MP, who campaigned for Remain, said: "The result is slightly more in favour of Remain than I anticipated.

"I think the important thing to realise is that although I think we are better off in the EU from an economic perspective, I completely respect the views of my constituents.

"If we stay in the fact that so many of them have voted to Leave means that I will have a job to do to make sure they understand what the decision means for the future.

"If the country decides to Leave then it will be a case of helping Wyre Forest to get through the subsequent economic uncertainty."
