Only here for the beer! - Former Conservative minister Rees Mogg pulls the pints for punters in Sedgley

Former Conservative minister and MP Jacob Rees-Mogg visited party members in Sedgley - and pulled the pints

The 56-year-old, who also celebrated his birthday at the weekend, was in conversation with the director of The Popular Conservatism (PopCon) group Mark Littlewood.

The evening at Sedgley Conservative Club was attended by 60 invited guests including ward councillors and hosted by former West Midlands MEP Bill Etheridge.

Afterwards Mr Rees Mogg got behind the bar and pulled pints for the thirsty guests.

During the talk, he gave a frank and detailed account of the failings of the last Conservative administration as well as his proposals for the party to get back in touch with its natural supporters

Amongst the insights he gave was that the Government, he said, was persuaded to take actions it was not instinctively keen on during the Covid crisis, blaming pressure from the SAGE committee for the over  long and unnecessary lockdowns

He also  laid out the principles he believed Conservatives should follow which included giving more responsibility to the individual taxpayer and less to the state and lower taxes, allowing the individual choice how to spend their money.

Mr Rees-Mogg, who was the MP for North East Somerset from 2010-2024, also served as leader of the House of Commons and Lord President of the Council from 2019-22 as well as having a three month spell as secretary of state for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

Bill Etheridge said: "It was wonderful to see Mr Rees-Mogg visit along with Mark Littlewood who chairs a group which is looking forward not back for a reset and at a bright future for the party going forward."
