New venue for variety show after closure of Cannock's Prince of Wales Theatre

Popular music and comedy night is back, 18 months after closure of Prince of Wales Theatre

Black Country comedian Doug Parker returns with his night of laughter and music at a new venue, following the closure of Cannock’s Prince of Wales Theatre.

Doug, known for his observational humour, was the last act to perform at Cannock’s Prince of Wales Theatre last year, supported by musicians Steve Ashcroft and Martin Lewis.

He had been a regular fixture at the theatre, but his annual show looked to be under threat when the theatre closed suddenly last year, with the council saying it was no longer viable.

But after an 18-month hiatus the show returns next month, coming to the Rose Theatre in Rugeley.

Doug, whose comedy act will once more be supported by classic songs from Steve and Martin, said he was delighted to be back.

“It will be a blend of non-stop clean comedy, with hits from the 60s, 70s and beyond,” he said.

“A show to make your sides ache with laughter with great songs and tunes that will stay in your memory forever.”

Tickets for the show, at 7.30pm on October 1, are priced £21.68, and can be purchased from the box office on 01889 584036.

Doug spoke of his sadness that the Prince of Wales had closed, and welcomed last month’s announcement that Cannock Chase Council now hoped to renovate the theatre.

“A lot of people say that traditional theatre is dead, but the Prince of Wales was always a successful theatre, and it was always packed out when we performed there.

“I hope the renovation will go ahead, and that they are not stalling for time.”
