Motorists in West Midlands warned to expect disruption as HS2 works sees M42 and M6 Toll closed over weekend

A section of both the M42 and M6 Toll will be closed throughout the weekend while HS2 works take place.

Motorists have been warned to expect disruption and diversions on a section of two motorways in the region as HS2 works continue.

HS2 has put out a notice that the M42 will be closed in both directions from junction 6 to junction 9, including the link on the M6 junction 4a, as as the M6 junction 3a link to the M6 Toll T1 and M6 Toll southbound from junction T2, from 9pm on Friday, September 18 to 5am on Monday, September 21.

The work will see work continue to install beams for the M42 Motorway Box and further work on the Water Orton Viaducts.

HS2 said a full diversion route would be put in place, with information on the HS2 website.

A spokesman for HS2 said: “Traffic management will be in place to enable our workforce to safely continue installing beams for the M42 Motorway Box in Solihull and to progress deck installation works on the Water Orton Viaducts across the motorway in North Warwickshire.

“A fully signed diversion route will be in place throughout the full weekend closures with low level noise from our works site.

“HS2 is undergoing a comprehensive reset to ensure it can be built efficiently and for the lowest reasonable cost.

“This work is being carried out in stages and will be completed in 2026. We will provide you with updates on the reset and what this means for our plans to build the railway in your area.”
