Major milestone as HS2 viaduct installed over Birmingham rail line
The installation forms part of ongoing work around the future Curzon Street station
A major engineering milestone has been achieved on the HS2 project after the Curzon 2 viaduct was successfully launched over Birmingham’s Cross City railway line.
The complex operation saw the viaduct pushed 93 metres across twin railway tracks during a weekend rail closure, allowing engineers to safely manoeuvre the huge structure into place with minimal disruption to services.
The final stage of the launch involved a 37-metre push, after which the viaduct was carefully docked and securely locked into position on all four supporting piers.

The achievement marks another significant step forward in the construction of HS2’s infrastructure in Birmingham, with the Curzon 2 viaduct set to play a key role in connecting the new high-speed railway into the city.
Project teams described the successful launch as a major feat of planning and engineering, requiring precise coordination throughout the weekend operation.

A video showing the viaduct launch and the engineering work behind the operation has been released by HS2, offering a closer look at the scale of the project.
The installation forms part of ongoing work around the future Curzon Street station, which will serve as the Birmingham terminus for HS2 services.
