One lane remains closed

Emergency services and highway maintenance teams responded to a serious incident on the M6 near Cannock after a car collided with a lamp column, causing significant disruption for motorists on Saturday evening.

The collision occurred on the northbound carriageway within Junction 11 of the M6 in Staffordshire at approximately 6pm.

Following the incident, National Highways closed the road to allow emergency responders to attend the scene and assess damage to the infrastructure.

Traffic was diverted off the motorway via the exit slip road at Junction 11 before being routed back onto the M6 using the entry slip road in an "up-and-over" diversion.

At the height of the disruption, delays reached around 30 minutes, with congestion stretching for approximately three miles on the approach to the junction.

Highways officers later confirmed that the vehicle had struck a lamp column, causing significant damage.

As recovery operations progressed, the full road closure was lifted; however, lane three remained closed in both directions to facilitate the safe removal of the damaged structure.
