Police closed the road eastbound between Junction 3 for Albrighton and Junction 2 for Wolverhampton at around 4.30am today - Friday, May 15.

National Highways confirmed it had reopened at around 2.30pm.

During the closure a diversion was put in place, with queues of around three miles while the road was shut.

At the time National Highways said a car had left the carriageway, and a ‘complex’ investigation was underway.

It has since been confirmed that Staffordshire Police discovered a man, believed to be in his 20s, dead in a Vauxhall Astra in woodland near to the road.

The force had been alerted to the potential tragedy after being contacted by West Midlands Police who said a man was being taken to hospital from a property in Smethwick with serious injuries after reporting being involved in a crash on the M54.

Staffordshire Police said the man, in his late teens, remains in hospital after suffering life-threatening injuries.

The force has appealed for anyone with information about the incident to contact them.
