Man taken to hospital after being spotted on bridge over River Severn in Bewdley

Emergency services were called to Bewdley over concerns for the welfare of a man on a bridge over the River Severn.

Police, ambulance and fire service were all sent to the scene on the A456 in the town shortly after 9pm on Monday.

The man had been spotted near the River Severn.

He was safely detained by police and later taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital for further treatment.

A Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "At 9.17pm on Monday, crews from Bewdley, Worcester, Evesham and the Water First Responder team from Wyre Forest were called to Bewdley where there were concerns for the safety of a man near the water.

"The man was handed over to care of the police and ambulance who also attended."

A spokesman from West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called by the police at 9:15pm to concern for a patient’s welfare at the A456 along the River Severn.

"One ambulance, two paramedic officers and our HART team attended the scene.

"We treated one patient, a man, before taking him to Worcestershire Royal Hospital for further treatment.”

A West Mercia Police spokesman added: "We were called at 8.52pm on Monday with a concern for safety on the A456, Bewdley.

"The man involved in the incident was safely detained by police and is now receiving the relevant support."
