'I’m really impressed with how it looks' - Wolverhampton landlord delighted following £300k pub refurbishment
A Wolverhampton pub has reopened following a major refurbishment costing close to £300,000.
The Silver Spur, located on Tunstall Hill close to Wolverhampton Racecourse, has welcomed customers back after undergoing an extensive renovation that has transformed the venue inside and out.
New landlord Paul – known to many as Wally – is new to the pub but not new to the trade, having worked for the brewery for a number of years and previously running another venue in Stoke-on-Trent, and said the work has given the pub a completely fresh look.
“Well, I spent just under £300,000 on it,” he said. “New furniture, carpets, pool tables, dart boards, new tables outside, a new bar – pretty much everything’s brand new. I’ve done a really, really good job of it. I’m really impressed with how it looks.”
“I’ve worked for the brewery for quite a number of years and done several different pubs for them,” he said. “My last pub was in Stoke-on-Trent. I was only there about two and a half years and they asked me to come here and run this once it was renovated, which was great.”
The Silver Spur had only been open for five days at the time of speaking, but Wally said he has already received a warm welcome from local residents.
“The people in the area have been really friendly,” he said. “A couple of locals even invited me out today to go and have something to eat with them. They all seem really happy with the pub.”
Community involvement will be a big focus for the venue going forward. Wally said he has always supported local initiatives and hopes the pub can play a role in helping the neighbourhood.
“I think very, very highly of food banks because in some areas people really need them,” he said. “We do a lot for food banks, and things like Easter eggs and toys at Christmas.”
Plans are also in place to turn the former car park into a space for community events, with activities planned throughout the summer.
“We’re going to be holding events out there – bouncy castles, stalls, little food stalls – anything we can do to raise a little bit of money for the local community,” Wally explained. “Every weekend, without fail, there will be entertainment on for the local community.
“We’ll be looking at things like bingo nights, quiz nights, Play Your Cards Right – anything people are interested in. I need to speak to them and see what they want, and if that’s what they want, we’ll make sure it happens.”
It is part of Proper Pubs group, the award-winning community of enterprise arm of Admiral Taverns, which has pumped £274,632 into the makeover.
Entertainment includes DJ karaoke every Friday from 8-11pm, a live singer every Saturday from 9-11pm and from 5-7pm every Sunday.
