'I reported it yesterday - it could easily have hurt someone' - Wolverhampton residents react to appearance of 'three-foot' sinkhole near city centre

The sinkhole, which residents estimated to be around four-foot-deep, is said to have appeared at around 1.30pm on January 10, leading to road closure at the junction the following day (January 11).

Now, residents have shared their shock at the appearance of the 'three-foot-wide' hole, saying that 'it could have really hurt someone'.

Hardjit Singh, of Clarkes Stores, on the junction of Vicarage Road and All Saints Road, said that he first reported the hole to the council at around 1.50pm on Tuesday night. 

He said: "It's a very active road, it will definitely affect our deliveries today. 

"I actually first reported it to the council yesterday at around 1.50pm. I went out and put a cone out to try to stop people from falling into it.

"I didn't see any council workers here until around 1pm today. It's terrible, really; anyone could have driven into it overnight. It needs to get fixed."

Other residents have reported travel issues this morning, saying that the road is a 'main route' through the neighbourhood.

Mark Langley, of the area, said: "It's a busy road. It's surprising that no car has gone down it yet.

"It's one of the main routes through the neighbourhood, so it will cause a bit of disruption. It's shocking, really; it's quite big."

The sinkhole is believed to have been caused by a burst water pipe, with cars now being diverted down alternative routes.

Surinder Kaur, of All Saints Road, said: "It looks really bad, I only really noticed it this morning.

"It looks around three-foot-wide and three-foot-deep. If someone fell down that, they would end up getting really hurt. 

"It's lucky that no one has driven a car into it, to be honest. Let's hope it gets fixed soon."

City of Wolverhampton has been approached for comment.
