Runners set off from North Street outside the Civic Halls and were in good spirits as they began the city's biggest road race of the year.

The Wolverhampton Half Marathon started at 8.30am and the 10k race got underway at 8.50am. Racers and fun runners mingled together before the starting gun sorted out the wheat from the chaff.

With grey skies and a slight drizzle of rain the runners could not have picked better conditions to run an endurance race.

David Priestly, who had travelled from Great Barr to cheer on his friend, said: "I think the course record could be broken today. And for the fun runners in the 10k race will be glad of the cooler temperatures and rain in their face.

"Plenty would have run into difficulties if this race had been held during the heatwave last month."

Road closures are in place throughout Wolverhampton this morning and early afternoon.

Buses routes have also been altered to make way for the runners this morning.
