Two Wolverhampton motorists rack up £12,000 parking fines
Wolverhampton Council has made nearly £12,000 from just two drivers in parking fines over the last two years, new figures have revealed.
A Freedom of Information request showed that just two drivers have clocked up fines totalling £11,890 in the last two years.
The two drivers had amassed nearly 200 tickets between them – with one driver left with 85 parking fines, while the other clocked up 115 tickets. It works out as a ticket every four days over the last two years for the drivers.
A spokesman for Wolverhampton Council said the process of issuing parking fines is used "proportionately and appropriately to encourage legal and safe behaviour".
The drivers were caught regularly in the same place by traffic officers – with the council issuing 71 tickets to one motorist for parking in Long Street, and the other driver received 48 fines at the Whitmore Street car park.
The one driver now owes Wolverhampton Council £5,910, while the other owes £5,980.
The Freedom of Information request also uncovered that the council has only collected £2,115 from 2016 when the driver owed them £6,600.
The FoI was submitted by the Liberal Democrats party in the city.
A Wolverhampton Council spokesman said: "It would not be appropriate for the council to comment on individual cases that could still be subject to legal action.
“The process of issuing Penalty Charge Notices is used proportionately and appropriately to encourage legal and safe behaviour by all road users when visiting our city.
“If individuals choose not to pay fines, there is a legal process to follow which can take some time.
“During this time, an individual may continue to flout parking restrictions which, of course, will attract additional fines.
“Ultimately, in some circumstances, there are severe sanctions that can be applied once a case has reached court, including the involvement of bailiffs and the potential seizure of goods including their vehicle.”
